Mist and Hoarfrost, Barnweil Monument

This old monument was erected as a tribute to William Wallace and sits on a hill in Ayrshire. On this winter morning it was minus 2C and the freezing conditions rendered hoarfrost on what little foliage there was. Its hard to think of a better location when conditions are like this.

Lovely early morning mist at this local gothic monument. Its incredible that it took me so long to realise the potential of this location, particularly as its only 10 mins from my home!

The Gothic Tower

I've photographed this gothic monument to William Wallace many times before, and from many angles, but this is the first time in infra-red. The sky was perfect, and the bright midday sun lit up the trees beautifully.

Arching

I love the shape of this graceful old tree, deep in the Ayrshire countryside. The constant westerly wind has sculpted it beautifully.

Awakening

Alarm calls before 4am generally aren't something I relish, but on this occasion a beautiful misty sunrise at Rannoch moor made it worthwhile.

Boats and Mountains, Loch Fada, Skye

A rather beautiful (if slightly midgey) start to the day on the Isle of Skye. It was worth waiting for the sun to clear the ever-present low bank of cloud on the horizon. It always seems to be there!

Cuillin down, Sligachan, Skye

A simply beautiful end to the day on the Isle of Skye. If it wasn't for those darned midges it would have been absolute perfection. So take a midge net if you're travelling there between April and September!

Singin in the rain, Elgol, Skye

A moody day at Elgol on Skye. A torrential downpour sent us looking for shelter under overhanging rocks. Luckily one of my group had an umbrella, and the moment I saw him contrasting with the mountains, that was my image of the day.

Highland Storr

OK, it wasn't selling shortbread or tweed jumpers. A beautiful display of pre-sunrise colour on Skye, looking toward the Old Man of Storr. Admittedly, the midges were pretty pesky, but a midge net and some smidge kept them at bay. Just.

Last throw of the dice, Skye

I waited for hours for a brief burst of direct light and had all but given up. Then the most sublime light hit the foreground rocks and the rocky promontory at Neist point.
